Mehrangarh

Standing tall, atop a 150-meter high hill at a distance of 5 km from the city of Jodhpur, the Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest forts in the country. It’s a grand structure that houses many palaces, temples and winding roads inside. In historical times it was a city on its own, enclosed within thick walls. The intricate carvings on palaces and temples reflect the fine taste of the royals and the expansive courtyards adjoining the palaces give a grand feel even today. Moti Mahal, the main palace houses the Sringar Chowki or the royal throne of Jodhpur. The Phool Mahal also deserves mention because of its gold filigree adorned ceilings. Apart from these, other noteworthy structures include the Rang Mahal and Chandan Mahal. There are other mansions like the Umaid Villa, Ajit Villa and the Maan Villa where one can see famous Rajput miniature paintings, musical instruments, royal attires and other things belonging to the royal family members. The fort was constructed in 1459 by Rao Jodha, at a time when he transferred his capital to Jodhpur from Mandore. More additions were done by subsequent rulers of Jodhpur as time passed. Peek into the tumultuous life of the Rajput women at the site of funeral pyre where they committed Jawahar or self-immolation.
